Langkawi is the main island of the Langkawi group located in the Strait of Malacca, roughly 18 miles long and 10 miles wide, and rises to 2,900 feet. We’re now 450 miles northwest of Singapore. Though most of the residents here are engaged in fishing, the island is also intensively cultivated with coconuts and rubber plantations. Kauh, the main village on the southern shore, is linked by roads to coastal settlements of Air Hangat & Padang Masirat – sometimes I wonder where these names come from. At any rate, this place is very well known, at least in this part of the world, for its beaches, waterfalls, hot springs, colored cliffs, historic caves & fishing grounds. The high temp for the day was 92 with humidity not far behind – we opted for the beach and a short trip through the countryside. Miles and miles of powdered sugar sand in front of South-Pacific style resorts – rather primitive in structure, but nice enough to attract many tourists. We found an isolated spot to lay our towels and spent about 3 hours in the water. When the tides started rolling-in, along came the jellyfish – first one, then two, then three… the largest about the size of my fist with tentacles at least 2 feet long. He floated within inches of us – just curious I guess, but it was enough to get us out of the water for the day because we were sure he had other friends. A nice change in pace from the hectic, crowded shore excursions, one of which we have scheduled tomorrow in Phuket, Thailand.
