Isafjordur, Iceland

As we typically do, Cheryl and I were among the first passengers off the ship though I’ll tell ya, it was a tough decision this morning given the low temps and overall weather conditions. There was a biting light rain that lasted about an hour and no stores open yet to give us a break. The supermarket opened at 10, with the hardware store scheduled for 11 – and it’s Saturday! I will say, the supermarket was very clean & well-stocked, though they didn’t carry electric shavers. Mine died 3 days ago and so far, I’ve not been able to replace it.
This lovely little historical town is the capital of the beautifully rugged Westfjord region and the birthplace of two of Iceland’s presidents.  The fishing industry is still  second-to-none, however, tourism is also a growing economic force. One would think with a major cruise ship in port, the local folks would make more of an effort to accommodate.
We returned to the ship by Noon and as we were having lunch, the Captain made an announcement about a very severe weather system directly in our path – high winds and 20’ seas. He said we’ll cut our stay tomorrow in Akureyri a few hours short and try to miss the worst of it. We’ll see…things could get interesting!
