Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia. It is situated on the northern coast of the country, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland – about 50 miles south of Helsinki, east of Stockholm and west of Saint Petersburg. Relatively small, it occupies an area of approximately 61 square miles and has a population of 445,000. They say a third of Estonia's total population lives in Tallinn. This is such a beautiful city with very diverse landscape – from the very old to the very modern. Loved it!
Folks estimate that the earliest human settlements here date back 5,000 years, making it one of the oldest capital cities of Northern Europe. Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe and not just in my opinion, but it’s also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tallinn is the major political, financial, cultural and educational center of Estonia. Often dubbed the Silicon Valley of Europe, it has the highest number of startups per person in Europe, and is a birthplace of many international companies, including Skype. It is ranked as a global city and has been listed among the top 10 digital cities in the world.
During the 1980 Summer Olympics, the sailing (then known as yachting) events were held at Pirita, just northeast of central Tallinn. Many buildings, such as the Olympia hotel, the new Main Post Office building, and the Regatta Centre, were built for the Olympics.
Not a bucket-list destination, but an extremely nice city to spend the day!
