Yesterday was, by far, our most
exciting day at sea in terms of weather since sailing around Cape Horn in 2012.
If Cape Horn was a ‘10’ on our motion scale, yesterday was a strong ‘8’. We hit
the central point of the storm system I mentioned shortly after sunrise and for
the ensuing 12 hours, had sustained winds of 55 knots with gusts as high as 72.
Despite weather conditions, we
still attended our usual activities throughout the day, though what a challenge
to navigate throughout the ship. I was almost
glad when the weather settled! There’s another system now just south of Japan
that may develop into a tropical storm – we’ll know in a day or so whether our
scheduled stop in Tokyo will be affected in any way. I think everyone’s biggest
concern right now centers around Hong Kong and all the civil unrest &
protests. If that situation continues to escalate or appears to be a potential
threat to anyone’s safety, we’ll not stop. Our berth in Hong Kong harbor is
just a few blocks from the downtown area where the violence has been occurring.
